Eight Strategic Priorities Unveiled at the 44th Geosciences Congress

The 44th Geosciences Congress was held with a focus on transforming exploration mechanisms and geological data management. Alireza Vaezi, the scientific secretary of the event, emphasized the necessity of replacing traditional models with intelligent algorithms and data-driven analytical approaches.

Artificial Intelligence Reduces Risks in Deep Exploration

Highlighting the importance of artificial intelligence in the mining economy, Vaezi stated: “The integration of large-scale geological datasets with advanced computational intelligence enables the identification of hidden mineralization patterns that remain undetectable through conventional methods.”

He added: “The implementation of the ‘Digital Twin’ concept in Geosciences allows exploration models to be simulated in a virtual environment before any field operations commence. This process not only enhances the accuracy of strategic resource estimation but also significantly reduces investment risks.”

Eight Pillars of Sustainable Territorial Development

According to the conference’s scientific secretary, the strategic roadmap for the sector has been structured around eight key priorities:

  1. Digitalization of Data Repositories – Transforming traditional information archives into dynamic, data-driven systems for rapid access and real-time monitoring.
  2. Sustainable and Green Mining – Securing mineral resources while minimizing environmental degradation and optimizing energy consumption.
  3. Smart Exploration – Integrating artificial intelligence into laboratory analyses and field operations to improve drilling success rates.
  4. Resource Diplomacy – Expanding regional and international cooperation through the scientific and technical capacities of Earth sciences.
  5. Hazard Resilience – Utilizing satellite data and predictive algorithms to manage risks associated with land subsidence, earthquakes, and other natural hazards.
  6. Advanced Mapping Technologies – Employing remote sensing systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and smart sensors to generate next-generation geological maps.
  7. Balanced Development – Establishing equilibrium between mineral resource exploitation and the preservation of the country’s natural heritage.
  8. Hydrological Monitoring – Developing innovative hydrogeological models to address water stress and improve groundwater resource management.

National Research Trends Shift Toward High-Tech Solutions

The Director of Improvement and Capacity Building at the Earth Sciences Research Institute presented an overview of submitted papers and noted a significant shift in the country’s scientific priorities.

“Statistical analysis indicates a sharp increase in researchers’ interest in emerging technologies,” he said. “Currently, 16 percent of scientific output is dedicated to geomatics and artificial intelligence.”

He further noted that economic and environmental geology account for 46 percent of submitted research papers, reflecting the scientific community’s growing focus on addressing real-world challenges in the mining sector and safeguarding national infrastructure.

Digital Earth as a Foundation for Technical Independence

Concluding the Congress, the scientific secretary stressed the importance of strengthening foundational education in Earth sciences. He described the establishment of a “Digital Earth” framework as a fundamental prerequisite for achieving technical independence in resource management and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the national economy.
